SHI Director of Software Engineering - AI & ML in Austin, Texas

Job Summary

The Director of Software Engineering - AI & ML will function as an Agile Software Development Manager (ASDM) and be responsible for ensuring project teams are functioning at a high level and delivering high-quality AI and machine learning solutions. The ASDM will also coach and mentor team members, foster a culture of collaboration and innovation, and ensure adherence to agile principles and best practices. Additionally, the ASDM will collaborate with other managers, stakeholders, and customers to ensure alignment of goals and expectations, focusing on the development and integration of cutting-edge AI and ML technologies.

This position is required to report to the SHI Austin, TX or Somerset, NJ office location as determined by SHI management.

Responsibilities

Includes, but not limited to :

  • Manage and mentor the software and AI/ML development team, including hiring, training, performance evaluation, feedback, and career development.

  • Define and communicate the vision, goals, and roadmap for the software products, projects, and AI/ML initiatives.

  • Facilitate and participate in agile ceremonies, such as sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives, and demos, with a focus on integrating AI/ML development processes.

  • Monitor and track the progress, quality, and budget of the software development projects and AI/ML initiatives, and report on the status and risks to stakeholders.

  • Ensure that the software products, projects, and AI/ML models meet the customer requirements, user expectations, and quality standards.

  • Research and evaluate new technologies, tools, and methodologies in the AI/ML space, and implement them to improve the software and AI/ML development process and outcomes.

  • Ensure that the team is following best practices for software development, code quality, testing, deployment, as well as AI/ML model development, training, validation, and deployment.

  • Monitor and troubleshoot software and AI/ML model performance, reliability, and security issues, and provide solutions.

  • Document expected application behavior, including interactions with AI/ML components.

  • Facilitate the release process of both software applications and AI/ML models into production.

  • Participate and collaborate with application and AI/ML model compliance audits.

  • Resolve any issues or conflicts that arise within or across the software and AI/ML development teams.

  • Communicate and coordinate with other managers, stakeholders, and customers, ensuring alignment of goals and expectations for both software and AI/ML development efforts.

  • Maintain confidentiality with regards to the information processed, stored, or accessed by both software applications and AI/ML models.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field, or equivalent work experience

  • 6+ years of experience with building and managing highly scalable, low latency software systems, with a focus on AI/ML technologies preferred

  • 6+ years experience leading engineering/ development projects and teams

  • 3+ years of experience in a managerial or leadership role

  • 2+ years experience driving AI/ML projects from concept through deployment

  • 2+ years of Scrum, SAFe, or Kanban agile frameworks preferred

Required Skills

  • Familiarity with cloud services (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and their AI/ML offerings

  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills

  • Strong understanding of AI/ML algorithms, data structures, and system design

  • Experience with AI/ML tools and frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch)

  • Passionate about software development and continuous improvement

  • Proficient in one or more programming languages, such as Python, C#, or Java

  • Experience with software development tools, such as Visual Studio, Github, Azure DevOps, Honeycomb, and Jenkins

  • Strong knowledge of software design principles, patterns, and best practices

  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks

  • In-depth knowledge of design patterns

  • In-depth knowledgeof SQL, relational database systems, RESTful API, Angular API, etc.

  • In-depth understanding of how web applications work including architecture and security

  • Ability to communicate complex subject matter- both verbally and written

  • Independent learner

Unique Requirements

  • Travel up to 10% as determined by management

Additional Information

  • The estimated annual pay range for this position is $120,000 - $175,000 which includes a base salary. The compensation for this position is dependent on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location and, therefore, will vary from individual to individual. Benefits may include, but are not limited to, medical, vision, dental, 401K, and flexible spending.
