JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for a Simulation Software Engineer to join our Simulation Software (SSW) Department of the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University. ARL/Penn State’s purpose is to develop innovative solutions to challenging national problems in support of the Navy, DoD, and Intel communities’ engineering and technology needs. This motivated and talented worker with science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) based education and background will perform software development activities supporting undersea system simulation for a variety of DoD applications. This position involves working with software and software models exclusively; no hardware and/or hardware-in-the-loop based M&S work is involved with the position.

The position will be located in State College, PA.

You will:

  • Design, setup and execution of software tests for simulation verification and validation; includes identification of appropriate metrics.

  • Analyze, design, and implement physics-based computational models (vehicle dynamics, sound propagation, signal processing, etc.) associated with undersea systems modeling and simulation.

  • Integrate and analyze vehicle software including guidance and control, signal processing, and vehicle controller into larger digital simulations.

  • Document algorithms, code design, software tests in accordance with sound software management procedures.

    Faculty rank will be commensurate with education and experience. Typically requires a Bachelors' degree in an Engineering or Science discipline plus five years' related experience. A Master’s degree or higher in Acoustics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Applied Math is preferred.

Additional responsibilities of a Level 4 include:

  • Provide technical leadership within the division for programs.

  • Make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of program goals.

  • May supervise lower level employees and students.

  • Ability to clearly articulate technical information to program sponsors and management.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • A background in modelling vehicle dynamics, signal processing, time series analysis, acoustics, undersea acoustics, numerical analysis & methods, statistics, autonomy algorithms, and/or computational physics is desirable.

  • Knowledge of programming for engineering applications and scientific applications is required.

  • Experience using version control software such as git or mercurial.

  • Ability to work closely with small cadre of highly trained professionals to meet challenging design and program objectives.

  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • C/C++ or Fortran programming experience.

  • Experience using Matlab and/or Simulink.

  • Knowledge of underwater acoustic data processing, sonar arrays is desirable.
